The Mission of a Toastmasters Club:
The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
About our Club:
The Capital Toastmasters Club is a friendly and diverse group of people who meet twice a month to work on public speaking skills. We meet regularly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month (second Tuesdays only July & August) at 6:00pm at the Center for Disability Services (formerly Center for Disabled), 314 South Manning Blvd. in Albany. We meet in room 511 A&B which is on the 1st floor to the right of the main (front) entrance.
Guests are welcome to come and observe our meetings anytime. Everyone is very friendly and supportive, and we welcome new members. It would be great if you would join us at one of our future meetings to get a better idea how the club works. If you like it, you can join at any time. Applications are available at meetings and our Vice President of Membership will help you fill it out.
The following is some detailed information about our meetings:
Each meeting is centered around a theme (ex. - risk-taking, sports, fun in the sun, etc.), which is chosen by a member a week or so before the meeting. The meetings follow a structured agenda and members sign up for major speaking roles in advance. Most speaking roles are prepared, but we also have a portion of the meeting devoted to impromptu speaking called Table Topics. Our goal at each meeting is to make sure that everyone has a chance to speak, but we do not pressure those who are uncomfortable. If a guest just wants to observe the meeting, we understand and accomodate. Every member is in control of their own speaking engagements, and we move at our own pace that is pressure-free. Each member's goal is different, but we all want to get better at public speaking through practice at Toastmasters meetings.
Dues:
Membership dues are prorated and vary depending on what month you join. As Toastmaster members, we pay our dues twice a year - every six months. If you join mid year, you are credited for the months you were not a member. There is a one-time new member fee which includes your Toastmasters speech manual. Our Treasurer would be happy to discuss the dues structure with you if you have any questions.
